Phil Shoenfelt: British singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer, lives in Prague, formed post-punk band Khmer Rouge in New York in 1981, played regularly at CBGBs, toured east coast USA as support for The Clash, Alan Vega, Nico, Billy Idol, The Gun Club, toured UK as support for The Fall in the mid 1980s, first solo record produced by Tony Cohen and released by Mark E. Smith on Cog Sinister, supported Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Crime & The City Solution on UK tours in the early 1990s, formed Phil Shoenfelt & Southern Cross in Prague in 1996, founded Fatal Shore and Dim Locator in Berlin, has had more than thirty CDs, LPs, EPs, singles, compilations released on independent labels in the UK, Germany, USA, Czech Republic, Spain and Greece, is the author of cult noir novels Junkie Love and Stripped.

Phil’s new solo album Cassandra Lied was recorded in Prague between August 2018 and November 2019. He was joined in this endeavour by several notable musicians, including co-producer and band-mate Chris Hughes (drummer with These Immortal Souls, Mick Harvey, Hugo Race, Alexander Hacke), and lapsteel guitarist Kristof Hahn of Swans.

A radical departure from Phil‘s previous work, Cassandra Lied has a lyrical depth which is comparable to the work of rock poets such as Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, Patti Smith and Nick Cave. The music itself is closer to the layered, atmospheric approach of artists like Brian Eno, David Bowie and Tony Visconti than it is to traditional rock dynamics. Other influences on this album are post-punk bands such as Joy Division and  Krautrock bands Neu and La Dusseldorf.

One of the things that distinguishes Cassandra Lied from most contemporary rock releases is its wide spectrum approach. Phil has managed to integrate influences that range from 1950s rockabilly, though folk rock, punk and psychedelia, to post-punk, indie and progressive-electronic. What is remarkable is that the inclusion of so many reference points never feels self-conscious or calculated. The centre always holds, kept together by sheer force of musical personality. Integrity and instinct are key factors here. And again, unlike most contemporary releases, the musical style and direction of Cassandra Lied cannot be pigeon-holed. The album is constantly shifting gears on a mind-blowing musical trip.
It is also difficult to pin down thematically. The ambiguity of the lyrics is challenging, a very long way from standard pop fare. Nothing definitive is ever stated, nothing is overtly criticized; yet the lyrics of a song like “Just A Man“ could be interpreted in the light of everything from Thus Spake Zarathustra and the Tibetan Book Of The Dead to #MeToo and Black Mirror. Even the title “Cassandra Lied” is full of ambiguity, open to a variety of interpretations. Complemented by high-end design by Friedel Muders of Fuego, this album is a tour de force from an artist who has been making music for over fifty years.


MOLOKO + (2024):

On 6th December 2024, Moloko + will release a new pressing of Phil Shoenfelt’s classic CD, Cassandra Lied. Originally released by Sireena Records in 2020, Cassandra Lied is Phil’s most ambitious album to date, both in terms of sonic experimentation and lyrical complexity.

Recorded in Prague between August 2018 and November 2019, Cassandra Lied features several notable guest musicians, including Chris Hughes (Hugo Race, Mick Harvey, Rowland S. Howard, Crime & The City Solution), Kristof Hahn (Les Hommes Sauvages, Swans) and Marcia Schofield (The Fall). The Hughes-Hahn rhythm/noise partnership is particularly important in creating the sonic architecture of the album. Behind the indie-pop melodies, there is an ambient drone at the periphery of the sonic spectrum that is both hypnotic and disturbing.

The title was suggested by a newspaper article from 2012, which tells the story of a twenty-three-year-old American woman, Cassandra Kennedy, who had lied about her father raping her when she was eleven. The father was sentenced to fifteen years in prison, until Cassandra’s confession twelve years later and his subsequent release. Phil extends the lyrical scope of the project by connecting this story with the Greek myth of Cassandra, the Greek prophetess of doom, in order to question the foundations of perceived reality in the age of Fake News, Misinformation and #MeToo. What constitutes “truth” and what constitutes “illusion”, and who can tell the difference? Yet these lyrical themes are not treated in an overt political way, but rather with ambiguous poetic imagery that evokes rather than stating the obvious.

Phils neues Soloalbum Cassandra Lied wurde zwischen August 2018 und November 2019 in Prag aufgenommen. Cassandra Lied ist eine einschneidende Abkehr von Phils früheren Werken und hat eine lyrische Tiefe, die mit der von Rockpoeten wie Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, Patti Smith und Nick Cave vergleichbar ist. Dabei steht die Musik selbst dem vielschichtigen und atmosphärischen Ansatz von Künstlern wie Brian Eno, David Bowie und Tony Visconti näher als dem der traditionellen Rockmusik. Weitere Einflüsse auf diesem Album sind Post-Punk-Bands wie Joy Division aber auch Krautrock-Bands wie Neu und La Düsseldorf.

Worin sich das Album von aktuellen Rock-Veröffentlichungen unterscheidet ist die große Bandbreite; so finden sich Einflüsse von 1950er Rockabilly, Folk Rock, Punk und Psychedelia, Post-Punk, Indie und Progressive-Electronic wieder. Bemerkenswert hierbei ist, daß die Einbeziehung so vieler unterschiedlicher Bezugspunkte sich nicht befangen oder kalkuliert anfühlt. Zusammengehalten durch die reine Stärke der Musik bleibt der Dreh- und Angelpunkt immer bestehen (Schlüsselfaktoren wie Integrität und Instinkt spielen hier eine große Rolle). Das Album läßt sich keinem bestimmten Stil oder einer Musikrichtung unterordnen und wechselt ständig den Gang auf einem überwältigenden musikalischen Trip.

Auch thematisch läßt sich das Album nicht eindeutig zuordnen. Mit mehrdeutigen Texten, weit entfernt vom Standard-Pop, wird hier nichts endgültig festgelegt oder öffentlich beurteilt; auch ein Song wie "Just A Man" kann in vielerlei Hinsichten - von "Also sprach Zarathustra" und dem Tibetanischen Totenbuch bis hin zu #MeToo und Black Mirror - interpretiert werden. Selbst der Titel "Cassandra Lied" steckt voller Doppeldeutigkeit und läßt Raum für eine Vielzahl von Interpretationen. Ergänzt wird das Album durch das High-End-Design von Friedel Muders (Fuego).

Der britische Musiker PHIL SHOENFELT startete seine Karriere Anfang der achtziger Jahre in der von ihm in New York gegründeten Post-Punk-Band KHMER ROUGE, die seinerzeit regelmäßig im legendären CBGB“s auftrat und als Tour-Support für Acts wie THECLASH, ALAN VEGA, NICO, BILLY IDOL, THE GUN CLUB oder THE FALL gemeinsam auf der Bühne stand. 1988 legte er mit “Charlotte“s Room” seine Debütsingle vor, die von MARK E. SMITH auf dessen Label Cog Sinister veröffentlicht wurde und in Folge dessen der Musiker gemeinsam mit NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS und CRIME & THE CITY SOLUTION auf Tour ging. Später arbeitete SHOENFELT, der auch als Buchautor tätig ist (“Junkie Love” / “Stripped”) und bis heute mehr als dreißig Tonträger veröffentlichte, mit Bands wie SOUTHERN CROSS, FATAL SHORE und DIM LOCATOR. Mit “Cassandra Lied” legt der Sänger und Gitarrist jetzt sein neues Soloalbum vor, auf dem er u.a. von Drummer (und Co-Produzent) CHRIS HUGHES (THESE IMMORTALSOULS, MICK HARVEY, HUGO RACE, ALEXANDER HACKE) und Gitarrist KRISTOF HAHN (SWANS) unterstützt wurde.
